New video

I made another video of myself jamming in Ableton, this time to Talking Heads' This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody).

I think I'm going to take a hiatus from doing the Song A Week project, in favor of putting together some new tunes that I'd be able to perform live. We'll see how it turns out, but hopefully it'll turn out some good stuff (if on an indeterminate timeline).

But for now, check out the video and let me know what you think.

Track 14

Track 14 by Oelav

Track 14 is up.

This one turned out pretty different from how I expected it to, but I think it's pretty good for what it is.

I had originally planned to include vocals, but after writing crap for lyrics and only coming up with marginally good vocal melodies, it sort of morphed into an epic guitar/synth wank session, to mildly entertaining effect. I had higher hopes for it, but for a less than 1-day turnaround time without a lot of time to work on it, I think it'll pass muster.

Something different

Didn't have much luck putting together a whole track for this week, so I thought I'd try something a little different.

This is me putting together a quick jam live in Ableton Live using a couple of drum loops, a couple of synths, and my guitar.

For putting it together in about 10 minutes, I think it came out pretty well. The audio was all recorded live as I was jamming it, and then I exported it and synced it up with the video.

I may do more of this in the future - it was fun, and it's kind of neat to be able to watch myself doing my thing. Food for thought, at any rate.

Track 13 (Needs)

Tune 13 by Oelav

Track 13 is up.

This one is another had-the-lyrics-but-didn't-know-what-to-do-with-them song. I put together the words and chords a couple of years ago and then basically sat on them until this week.

It's a fun little song - not much to it, but it's an entertaining listen I think. More and more I'm realizing that even though I can sort of fake it, I actually have no idea how to properly sing. That's something I think I should pursue - developing a good singing voice, with more or less proper technique and everything. We'll see if that actually comes to fruition.

The sound quality on the mp3 I uploaded is much better than what's on their now - Soundcloud convert it to a lower bitrate, which among other things makes the guitar sound sort of warbly.

Track 12

Tune 12 by Oelav

Track 12 in the project is now up.

This one sort of came out of left field. I laid down the basic groove a couple of weeks ago at the coffee house I go to, and then didn't really do much with it until the end of this week. I had a couple of so-so ideas earlier in the week for some other tunes, not really remembering I had put these down, and then popped open my laptop Thursday night and found this in there.

Pretty happy with this one overall. Some tweaks I could make to it yet, but on the whole I think it's a solid track.

Non-project tracks

Didn't have a chance to work on a tune for this week, due in part to having spent a fair chunk of the week putting creative energies towards music for some e-learning projects at work. Figured I may as well post it here.

One for a video for prospective foster parents:

A couple for a project that involves people of various ethnic backgrounds (hence the different styles):

One for an intro video for new students on campus:

Track 11

Tune 11 by Oelav

Track 11 in the project.

First tune in the project I've written lyrics for (as opposed to using stuff I'd written previously). I'm mostly happy with it overall - as usual, there are some tweaks to the mix, etc. that I could make, but mostly I'm happy with it.

The lyrics don't really have any personal meaning. I came up with the melody and guitar part early this week and was singing gibberish over it for a couple of days, and the words now are basically the 'sounds-like' equivalents for that gibberish.

Not that much else to say about it - but I'm pretty happy with the track. Let me know what you think.
